Hello, my name is Dr. Greg Beasley and I am a chiropractor of 19 years in Everrett wa. If you are reading this you most likely have searched for information on whiplash in the Everett area. The title of this blog my seem strange, but the little word "PIP" is very important.
What is PIP and why do you need it. PIP, stands for Personal Injury Protection. In other states this is called No Fault Insurance. When you purchase car insurance you have the option of buying health insurance for yourself. Basically if you have PIP and you get into a car accident PIP pays for your medical bills. Even if you are at fault PIP pays your medical bills. Also, if you are not at fault PIP will pay for your medical bills and your insurance cannot increase your rates if you use PIP. PIP is so important that you have to sign a waiver with your insurance agent stating that you were told the benefits of PIP and that you refused to purchase it.
If you have private health insurance do you still need PIP? Yes! Some private insurance companies will not pay for your care if you were involved in a car accident. Also PIP does not have a deductible nor copays and private insurance does. Some private health insurance does not cover physical therapy nor massage therapy and PIP does.
In my office I will see about two new patients a week who have been involved in a car accident and have whiplash. About 25% of the state of Wa does not have insurance on their cars. So you have a 25% chance of being injured by someone who will have no way of paying for the care you need from the collision nor paying you a settlement if you have pain and suffering. If you have PIP on your car insurance your medical bills will be paid, even if the person who hit you does not have insurance.
The good news is that if you do not have PIP on your insurance and even if you do not have private insurance I wll still accept you as a patient. What this means is that my office will wait to be paid out of your settlement. This may take six months or three years depending on your injuries and how long the at fault party wants to take to settle. So care in here will not be disrupted. Unfortunately there are no medical clinics that will take a patient without PIP or private health insurance. What this means is that it is much more difficult for me to get you the other care that you may need after your whiplash. This includes massage therapy and physical therapy. Many of the patients I treat from whiplash injuries will need MRI. I do have one company that will work with patients without PIP and do the MRI as long as there is a letter from an attorney stating that they will be paid at the settlement.
